Tanzeemul Madarisil Islamia

(Formerly Edaray-e Ta'lim wa Tanzim)

Introduction

In the history of Islam, the role of religious Madrassas has been written in golden letters. The strong contribution of Madrassas in the propagation, expansion, and preservation of Islam is widely recognized. Madrassas have played a vital role in keeping Islam alive in different parts of the world. Without Madrassas, it becomes extremely difficult to maintain the correct understanding and practice of Islam within a society.

History clearly shows that in many regions where Madrassas gradually disappeared, Islam also declined and eventually vanished from those places. There were regions where great scholars once spread the teachings of Islam across the world, where Islamic books were studied and respected throughout the Muslim world, and where scholars enlightened people with knowledge and guidance. Unfortunately, many of those once-flourishing centers of Islamic learning are today empty of Muslims. Mosques and Madrassas in some of those areas have been turned into churches, and in certain places only a few people remain who identify themselves as Muslims merely because their forefathers were Muslims.

In many such societies, people have little or no knowledge about the basic pillars of Islam. They are unaware of Salah, fasting, and even the fundamental declaration of faith. This alarming condition clearly demonstrates that when Madrassas disappear, the authentic knowledge of Islam also disappears gradually. As a result, people begin to forget the teachings of Islam, and eventually the religion loses its presence in that region. Historical examples of this reality can be seen in places such as Spain in Europe and regions like Bukhara, Samarkand, and Tashkent in Asia.

Importance of Madrassas

Madrassas are the primary institutions where scholars of Islam are nurtured. The scholars, who are often described as Warasatul Anbiya (the inheritors of the Prophets), emerge from these institutions. Madrassas serve as the foundation of Islamic education where the teachings of the Qur'an and Hadith are systematically taught and preserved.

Students who graduate from Madrassas dedicate their lives to guiding society in the light of Islamic teachings. They encourage people to follow righteousness and advise them to avoid wrongdoing, based on the guidance of the Qur'an and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Allah Almighty has praised scholars in the Qur'an, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) has also emphasized their honor and status through numerous sayings. The Madrassa is the place where this respected and honored group of scholars is formed. Therefore, the importance of Madrassa education cannot be overstated, as it plays a crucial role in protecting and preserving the religion.

Madrassas in Assam and North-East India

In Assam and the broader North-Eastern region of India, Madrassas have existed for centuries and have played a major role in the religious and educational development of the Muslim community. The presence of a large number of Madrassas in the region has contributed to maintaining Islamic awareness and strengthening religious identity.

Traditionally, two types of Madrassas were prevalent in Assam:

  • Qawmi Madrassas
  • Government Madrassas

Both types of institutions served the cause of Islamic education for a long time. Government Madrassas also produced capable scholars who provided leadership and guidance to the Muslim community at different levels.

However, in recent years the direction of many government Madrassas has raised concerns among scholars. Observing their present condition and the policies adopted by the Government of Assam, it has become evident that many of these institutions are gradually being converted into general schools. As a result, the opportunity to produce qualified Islamic scholars from these institutions is becoming increasingly limited.

Need for Organized Madrassa Education

Considering the changing circumstances, it has become necessary to strengthen and reorganize the Qawmi Madrassas established in various regions. Where Madrassas do not exist but are needed, efforts should be made to establish new institutions and ensure their proper development.

For this purpose, a well-organized system and a structured educational board are essential. Such a system ensures that the curriculum, teaching methods, and examination processes of Madrassas are conducted in an organized and disciplined manner.

Recognizing this need, North East India Emarat e Shariah and Nadwatut Tameer took a historic and timely initiative to organize and regulate Madrassa education in the region.

Establishment of the Nadwa Education System

Several Qawmi Madrassas in North-East India expressed their willingness to adopt a unified curriculum and follow a structured system of education. These Madrassas applied for recognition under the educational initiative developed by the organization.

19 March 2017 — Formal Recognition

Accordingly, on 19 March 2017, during the meeting of the Central Majlis-e-Shura held at the conference hall of Gyan Kuthir near Ghuramara Chari Ali, Guwahati, the applicant Madrassas were formally recognized under this educational framework. This step marked an important milestone in organizing Madrassa education in the North-Eastern region of India.

Formation of Tanzeemul Madarisil Islamia (2022)

In 2022, the educational department previously known as Edaray-e Ta'lim wa Tanzim was reorganized and officially renamed Tanzeemul Madarisil Islamia.

This department now functions as the central authority responsible for regulating, guiding, and developing Madrassa education under North East India Emarat e Shariah and Nadwatut Tameer. Its aim is to strengthen the Madrassa system and ensure that Islamic education continues to flourish in the region in a structured and organized manner.

Functions and Responsibilities

Tanzeemul Madarisil Islamia performs several important responsibilities for the development, regulation, and advancement of Madrassa education across North-East India.

  • Supervise and regulate affiliated Madrassas so that they operate according to a unified academic structure. Through proper coordination and guidance, the department ensures that the educational activities of Madrassas are conducted in an organized and disciplined manner.
  • Improve the quality of Madrassa education by preparing suitable courses and curricula that combine traditional Islamic learning with necessary elements of general education. This integrated approach helps students gain strong religious knowledge while also becoming aware of modern educational requirements.
  • Grant affiliation to Private Madrassas, Qawmi Madrassas, and Banat (Girls') Madrassas throughout the North-Eastern region of India. Through this affiliation system, Madrassas are brought under a common academic framework where teaching standards, curriculum structure, and examinations are maintained in a systematic way.
  • Conduct centralized examinations for higher stages of Islamic education, including Dawra-e-Hadith, Takmeel-e Alia, and Takmeel-e Hifz. These examinations ensure that students graduating from affiliated Madrassas meet proper academic and religious standards.

Through these initiatives, Tanzeemul Madarisil Islamia plays a vital role in preserving the tradition of Islamic scholarship and preparing future scholars who will guide society with knowledge, wisdom, and moral values.

Implementation of Curriculum

150+
Affiliated Madrassas across North-East India
5000+
Students enrolled across affiliated Madrassas
2017
Year of first formal recognition
2022
Year of official renaming

According to the curriculum and regulations prepared by Tanzeemul Madarisil Islamia, more than 150 Madrassas across North-East India are currently functioning under this structured educational system.

These Madrassas follow a standardized academic framework designed by the department. The system ensures uniformity in teaching methods, course content, and evaluation procedures across affiliated institutions.

The curriculum has been carefully designed to maintain a balance between classical Islamic studies and general educational subjects. Students study the Qur'an, Hadith, Fiqh, Arabic language, and other essential Islamic sciences along with selected general subjects that help them engage effectively with modern society.

Through this structured educational system, Madrassas implement organized classroom instruction, systematic teaching methods, and proper examination processes. This approach has significantly improved the overall academic standard of Madrassa education in the region.

Today, more than 150 affiliated Madrassas operate successfully under this framework, following the educational guidelines and academic standards established by Tanzeemul Madarisil Islamia and contributing to the intellectual and moral development of the Muslim community in North-East India.
